The Race on Mermaid Reef is a children’s picture book written by Tamara Rittershaus and illustrated by Alvin Adhi. The story follows Abby, a crab who loves to boast about her speed and her ability to race faster than the other sea creatures. One day, Abby challenges Ray the stingray to a digging race and Lola the lobster to a running race, defeating them both. Skip the seahorse observes everything and comforts Ray and Lola. Despite knowing he is the slowest swimmer in the reef, Skip bravely challenges Abby to a swimming race. Abby swims as fast as she can, confident that she will win easily. However, Skip utilizes the sea current to his advantage, showing unique swimming skills. This experience leads Abby to realize that speed is not everything and that she may not be the fastest after all.
The Race on Mermaid Reef is a delightful story that imparts valuable lessons about working smarter rather than harder. It also teaches children to be humble and kind and to understand their own strengths. Young readers will enjoy the competitive nature of the sea creatures and discover fun facts about them. The story encourages critical thinking and the development of strategic problem-solving skills. Tamara Rittershaus has crafted characters that children can relate to and an engaging plot that will excite them. The colorful illustrations bring the underwater world to life, captivating children and keeping them engrossed in the story. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend sharing it with children to teach them the importance of being strategic and working smart rather than hard.
