What kind of amateur hacker sets out to blackmail the wife of a computer wizard who also happens to be a security expert? Certainly not the smart kind. In The Ransom Enigma by Charles Breakfield and Rox Burkey, JJ and Jo Rodreguiz have just moved into their new home in Magnolia Bluff, Texas, and it seems like the perfect place for Jo to escape public notice, as most would not expect the world-famous supermodel to live there. However, she fails to escape the notice of Adam Rawley, who anonymously threatens to expose her unless she pays him one hundred thousand dollars in cryptocurrency, so JJ goes to deliver it. Rawley is running a blackmail scheme, and he has several potential victims, apart from tricky ones like JJ, who are closing in on him. Before anyone else could get more information, Joyce, a friend of JJ and Jo Rodreguiz, goes to check on her latest client, who shockingly turns out to be a very dead Adam Rawley sprawled out beside a comatose JJ. JJ becomes the chief murder suspect, but there is more to this than meets the eye.
The Ransom Enigma by Charles Breakfield and Rox Burkey is a perfect combination of skill, organization, storytelling, and sheer entertainment. The map of Magnolia Bluff helps the reader to get a sense of the “close-knit and small town with few secrets” setting being portrayed. The story itself is an example of excellent plot progression, starting like a drama, with much effort going into the characters and backstory before sparking conflict at the right time. I liked that the chapter headings gave me an idea of what to expect without giving too much away, while the suspense and plot twists kept me on edge. The Ransom Enigma has no shortage of positives to wax lyrical about—sophisticated enough to keep your interest, but also simple enough to understand. If you are looking for a good mystery, crime, or thriller to keep you entertained, The Ransom Enigma will surpass your expectations, as its quality is up there with the bestsellers.
