The Reckoning at Ravensmoor by Samuel Riding is the story of a solicitor's assistant who finds herself overseeing a property dispute on northern moorland. Every time Clara Whitmore tries to copy the documents related to the case of Partridge versus Stone, the writing itself seems to turn into ash. Sent to look after the legal proceedings at the property, Clara soon discovers that the land's claims are etched in blood and fire, going back centuries. At first glance, it looks like a regular property dispute. But soon, Clara realizes that it is something far more insidious and dark, with the Hollow Lady trying to direct Clara's every move. There's a bargain that binds the dead with the living. Clara must now find a way to free the land and its inhabitants, who yearn to break the chains holding them.
The Reckoning at Ravensmoor is a supernatural mystery with plenty of suspense and intrigue. Samuel Riding infuses the narrative with a sense of tension and dread that makes for a really absorbing read, and you will find yourself completely immersed in the story. The setting comes alive, creating an ambiance that is both gripping and mysterious. You almost feel like you're in a time and place far away from your own. The story also has its fair share of horror elements, and the characters have very specific roles that define their personalities. Clara is a fascinating protagonist who slowly learns to embrace her destiny. Overall, I enjoyed the book very much. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves atmospheric supernatural horror stories.
