The Red Texts Club by Andrea VanRyken explores the insecurities of three fourteen-year-olds. Ben is a puzzle geek with no friends and does not fit in, Kirsten is an eccentric blue-haired gamer with one close friend, and Liam is the popular jock who is good at every sport but hates the spotlight. On one mysterious day, Ben receives a text in red font to meet at a tree, and soon Liam and Kirsten find themselves at the same tree. A simple meeting with encrypted text from a stranger quickly turns into a bizarre, mind-boggling, horrific, unexpected, and life-altering experience for the three teens and the others who have gone missing from the same school. Though worlds apart, these teens must work together and use their unique skills to escape the faceless monsters in a dark loop of terror.
The Red Texts Club by Andrea VanRyken is absorbing, compelling, creative, and daring. There are multiple messages carefully woven into this story. It can be about teamwork and friendship or how stereotypes prevent us from making unique and valuable connections. It's a psychological thriller about how destructive thinking can take on a life of its own as it begins to control everything good and beautiful about us at our core. It portrays a powerful message about teenage suicides and how teenagers reaching out to each other is often a better solution than the common psychological interventions. VanRyken tackles a grave issue in an adventurous, fun, and entertaining way. The book is well-written, and I loved every minute of reading it.
