The Redwood Asylum by L.A. Detwiler is a paranormal horror story. The Redwood Asylum stands alone in a thick forest. The stone façade hides a grim history of criminally insane, disturbed people, hidden away from the world. Jessica Rosen is 26 and she needs to forget her past. She hopes that taking a job at the asylum will help her move forward but, almost immediately, she senses that things are very wrong. The man in 5B has got his hooks into her but when his seemingly insane talk and terrifying pictures begin to make sense, Jessica wants to help. That sets her on a terrifying journey as she delves into his past. With strange inmates and even stranger staff, the asylum’s secrets get into Jessica’s head and follow her home. She doesn’t have long to solve the mystery of the man in 5B before she herself is dragged down into the depths, trapped forever in the horrors of Redwood Asylum. Not long before she, too, has to confront the horrors of her past.
The Redwood Asylum by L.A. Detwiler is a terrifying story that will haunt you long after you have finished it. The story is written in the present tense, with chapters alternating between stories of the inmates and Jessica’s own story. It feels almost like a true story and is written in haunting, descriptive prose that will send shivers down your spine. It is not a fast, high-octane story, more of a slow-burner than builds suspense as it goes. It is filled with twists and turns, each taking you in a new direction, and the twist right at the end is one you won't see coming. If you like spine-chilling tales that play with your mind, this is the perfect story for you.
