The ReShift Pulsers Saga: Origins by William Ricker begins in the 1920s in Cotonou. Childhood friends Kivon Kingsley and Vincenza Eghosa discover a magical African oak tree that is a gateway to Aveklanu, a hidden realm filled with wonder and danger. Aveklanu is divided among three factions: the Pulsers, protectors of Earth’s energy; the Shifters, who control time and space; and the Revolters, who seek to dominate reality. After Kivon is chosen to train as the Pulser heir for ten years, Vincenza remains behind, forging her own path. By the 1930s in Atlanta, Vincenza joins a secret resistance defending Aveklanu’s powerful relics from Theodore Slim, the Revolters’ leader, who hunts a device to rewrite reality. Reunited, Kivon and Vincenza unite the factions in a desperate fight across continents to stop Slim and save both worlds.
“‘The mission to the Nexus Gateway is critical... The fate of Aveklanu could depend on it.’” William Ricker’s The ReShift Pulsers Saga: Origins is a spectacularly unique, genre-defying work that showcases diversity, not only in ethnicity but also in skills, backgrounds, and origins, presenting a world where minorities across continents come together in shared purpose. There are many spinning plates, but Ricker's crisp writing and clarity allow us to remain focused, and he does an exceptional job of pulling us through a thoroughly fleshed-out world, and all that shapes the different factions. The magical system is as solid as its strong character interactions, leaning into emotional moments that arise naturally from believable relationships, such as Alonzo’s literal battles and Miguel’s trust issues, grounding the action. Overall, Ricker's thoughtful approach to representation in a brilliant start to an ambitious series makes this, and no doubt what is to come, a saga that cannot be missed.
