The Road to Kalbakar: Wyrms of Pasandir by Paul E. Horsman is a young adult fiction novel with fantasy, adventure, and magic. This book will appeal most to an audience made up of primarily young adults who enjoy stories of adventure, fantasy, and magic; though some adults might also enjoy it. The Road to Kalbakar follows Eskandar, a seventeen-year-old messenger boy on a Navy sloop. Eskandar's life is one filled with message running and dirty jobs that provide a rather dull existence, but a safe one. This safety is violently ripped away from young Eskandar when the sloop comes into contact with sea monsters; this event forces Eskandar to reveal his magic and lose his normalcy in order to save not only his own life, but that of the crew as well.
The Road to Kalbakar: Wyrms of Pasandir is a well written young adult novel packed full of adventure, magic, and monsters, yet somehow Paul E. Horsman managed to seamlessly combine all of these different factors and aspects into a plot line that really pulled me in. The characters all had their own personalities, even Teodar, the magical teacher voice inside Eskandar’s head. My favorite characters were Eskandar and Teodar. I really liked how the two interacted with each other, even though Teodar’s voice was just in Eskandar’s head. All in all, The Road to Kalbakar: Wyrms of Pasandir by Paul E. Horsman is an amazingly well written young adult book that I hope has a sequel in its future.
