At the beginning of The Robot and the Dinosaur, the world of Elliott the Robot unfolds in glistening perfection. While usually focused on the future, Elliott is curious about the past. After building a time machine, he travels to the age of dinosaurs. But upon his arrival, Elliott is confused and appalled; dirt and disorder are everywhere. More than a bit shocked, he immediately decides to return until he hears an earthshaking roar. Elliott asks for a tour after meeting Mason, a welcoming prehistoric reptile. When taken to meadows brimming with flowers and other equally beautiful sights, his assessment is predictable. Even when taken to the edge of a boiling volcano, his reaction is much the same. But as Justin Judkins tells the tale and Kiera Vidal depicts, when Elliott returns to his own time and finds that what he once appreciated has dramatically changed, the value of the story unfolds.

The theme of The Robot and the Dinosaur—that difference offers a multitude of pathways to enrichment—resounds throughout the narrative. As Justin Judkins makes it readily apparent, one of the most significant lessons stems from the unlikely friendship between Elliott and Mason. One is a state-of-the-art mechanical being, and the other is a gigantic T-Rex, yet they quickly find common ground. The value of the time spent in a place that could not be more foreign made it impossible for Elliot to revert to his old self. Parents reading this picture book with their children can highlight why dismissing abundant wonders hinders enjoying day-to-day living. With lively illustrations by Kiera Vidal complementing the text, this delightful and relevant book could be the gateway to a child creating fantastic tomorrows.
