The Rocket, written and illustrated by Daryl Horton, is a charming and modern take on Peter Newell’s classic The Rocket Book. It captures the joy and chaos that ensue when a young boy ignites a hidden rocket in his apartment building. Horton brings fresh energy to the original story by updating the imagery and themes. His playful rhymes and vibrant illustrations make this reimagined tale accessible to contemporary readers, while the underlying commentary on interconnectedness and personal space adds a thoughtful layer to the fun. In this whirlwind adventure, the rocket blasts through multiple floors, disrupting everyday lives in amusing and surprising ways.

From dinner tables to pianos, Daryl Horton's storytelling keeps readers on edge, wondering what new trouble will emerge with each page turn. The diverse characters living in the apartment, although connected by the rocket’s journey, experience it uniquely and humorously, highlighting the spontaneity of life and how unexpected events can bring people together. This adaptation skillfully blends whimsy with modern-day reflections on urban living, making it a delightful read for children and adults. Horton's ability to keep the charm of the original story while adding his voice to the narrative makes The Rocket a memorable and heartwarming tale. Each “flat” is engaging and imaginative, with illustrations that complement the text and let readers see the characters’ emotions. The Rocket will undoubtedly spark the imaginations of a new generation of readers. It is an excellent addition to classrooms and home libraries. This is a story that you’ll want to read again.
