The Runaway Pony: A Magical Fantasy Pony Tale by Angharad Thompson Rees is the fourth book in the Magical Adventures and Pony Tales series. Sophia is a spoiled princess used to having anything she asks for and getting everything her way. While out riding, her pony, now bored with her life, has a daring idea: to take them away to freedom. When the two get lost, they find themselves in the land of Faerie and discover they’re being followed by a mysterious creature that sets them on a challenge they’ll have to pass if there’s any chance for them to return home.
Sophia was previously seen in The Girl and her Pony as a foil to Franny’s relationship with a stubborn royal pony. Now it’s her time to learn a lesson in friendship and to discover a unique bond with her own stubborn pony. The story uncovers a new layer to the character which brings more depth to the spoiled princess. The story finds her growing tired of her upbringing and constantly being watched, which has driven her to finally seeing past the royal life to the true value of friendship and kindness. Her pony has her own ideas about adventure and wants to break free of her boring life so she takes advantage of an opportunity to run away. Sophia still has a spoiled attitude, but as the story progresses, she becomes more than the spoiled princess she was and discovers she wants more in her life.
Angharad Thompson Rees uses Sophia to explore how powerful friendship can be and how it can completely change your life. She and her pony connect over their similar feelings of stifling confinement, which allow them to gain an understanding of each other. Rees explores a unique new world through the land of Faerie with strange creatures and valuable life lessons. The princess and her pony meet unusual characters that teach Sophia about caring for others when she must make a choice between saving herself and saving a friend. The wonders she sees in this other world allow Sophia to take a real look at herself and her behavior which pushes her to consider her actions. The Runaway Pony is a delightful tale about a spoiled princess and her pony on an adventure that teaches them a lesson in friendship and kindness.
