The Seashell Safe Harbor: Be Happy is a children’s picture book by Sherrie Schmidt about Happy, a sailboat. Happy has always spent his time in the harbor, and never journeys out to sea. He loves singing with his friends Starfish Sue, Pelican Hugh, and Dolphin Rue. Lighthouse Lou watches over him, and the people who visit the harbor like him because he has a big smile on his sails. Everything was perfect for him until one day Captain Drew said that they were to sail out on the ocean. Happy fears the waves, rocks, reefs, and other elements at sea, but his friends tell him they will be his guides. Join Happy as he puts out to sea for the first time.
The Seashell Safe Harbor is a great story that will teach children to be courageous and remind them that they are never alone. Sherrie Schmidt showcases her creativity in this unusual tale. The book delivers its intended message perfectly but also teaches children about sailing. The last section of the book contains a glossary of sailing terms and their definitions and includes questions related to the story. The book also had a beautiful dark starry sky and sea waves and other colorful illustrations. I liked all these details because they were eye-catching and made the book visually appealing. I loved the opening quote in this book about how a ship is safe in the harbor, but that is not what it is built for. We all evolve from one stage to another as we grow, and it is scary to face new situations. Being with people who love us will help us navigate life's rough seas and achieve our goals.
