The Seasiders by A.J. Griffiths-Jones is a tale of mystery. Grace and Dick are happy. They have the beautiful Sandybank Guesthouse overlooking the beach. Visitors come to the guesthouse every year, taking in the beautiful surroundings and the fabulous home cooking, but it is not the tourists we need to worry about, it’s the locals. The town is full of secrets, wagging tongues and flapping curtains, and Grace and Dick do their best to carry on amongst it all, caring for their guests and making sure they enjoy themselves. One secret is bigger than all the others, but whose is it?

The Seasiders by A.J. Griffiths-Jones is a thrilling tale of mystery and suspense. It took me a while to get into the story, but once I did I was there for the duration. This isn’t just one story about a town and a guesthouse; this is several stories delicately woven together and ending with a neat twist. The characters were colorful, each developed very well so we knew their background and who they were. That detail helps with the story because it all has some relevance. This is not a book I would say was action-packed, with lots of twists and turns, because it isn’t. It’s a story that plods gently along, taking the reader for a ride along the coastal path and the only twist was at the end. And a good one it was too, very surprising and totally unexpected. I would recommend this story to anyone who likes a gentle mystery, a book that they can lose themselves in for a few hours and come out the other end with their sanity intact.
