Author Biography

Jill Hovis is a former educator and recreation professional with over twenty-five years of experience working with elementary students and their families. She is active in her local writing community and is the founder of the Women Writers of Catawba County.

Jill is a middle grade author in Hickory, North Carolina, and when she's not writing, you can find her with her husband exploring the Blue Ridge Mountains or spending time at home with their twelve rescue cats.

In The Secrets of Shadywoods by Jill Hovis, Maggie and Julie plan to go to an art camp together, but Maggie is in for a rude disappointment. Maggie’s mom unexpectedly announces an immediate move to a campground in Georgia. Maggie’s fate is to be stuck in a cramped camper for the whole summer. But when she meets Darlene, a girl who pines for excitement, Maggie's summer takes a thrilling turn. Together, they explore the secrets of the Shadywoods Campground, from a hidden treehouse to a mysterious witch. The secrets pile up, and Maggie begins to feel the weight of it all. With peril lurking around every corner, will The Secrets of Shadywoods come crashing down around them?

Which is scarier, falling into a snake pit or being bewitched? Both are possibilities in The Secrets of Shadywoods by Jill Hovis. Maggie is a creative and sensitive character, while Darlene is an independent risk-taker. Hovis’ descriptive writing style gives the reader a front-row seat as this dynamic duo slays the doldrums of a scorching summer. In their quest to make the most of their time off from school, they face challenges and learn valuable life lessons. Friendship, family, triumph, and honesty are principal themes. The use of emails to introduce many of the chapters adds realism and intimacy while the creatively simple illustrations add to the story’s believability.
