The Senator's Daughters (Breaking Unity Series) by J.C. Graham is a political thriller and book one of the series. The US government is bankrupt and the country is falling apart. People are not receiving their welfare checks, public housing is falling into disrepair and tensions are rising within the civilian population. California, keen for independence, votes to secede from the Union and forms the Army of the Republic of California. Anna, Sophie, and Amber are the daughters of Senator Jenkins. They each have their own lives, families, and problems which become increasingly precarious as secession is forced upon them. The Senator and his daughters end up on very different sides of the divide. For the Senator there is a fine line between being a father and serving the federal government, the latter increasingly taking priority, but with dreadful consequences.

J.C. Graham has written a gripping family drama set against a backdrop of political and civil unrest, where ordinary people get caught up in an extraordinary situation. All the characters were realistically portrayed and I found them very engaging. I particularly liked Sophie's storyline where she was torn between her soldier husband, who battles for Californian independence, and her powerful, politically motivated father, a Senator who is part of the very fabric of the establishment. The Senator's Daughters is an intriguing and appealing novel which I thoroughly enjoyed. I am so glad this isn't a stand-alone book as there is great potential to develop the story further. I really look forward to reading more from this author.

The Senator’s Daughters is a work of deep and complex political drama fiction penned by author J. C. Graham and is the opening novel to the Breaking Unity Series. Anna, Sophie, and Amber have spread out across the States in pursuit of their own independent lives, but as daughters of the US Senate Majority Leader, they can never fully escape the impact of politics on their daily lives. This becomes all the more evident when an inevitable shutdown arrives and California motions to secede. Tensions run high within the family and across many states as a variety of laws, protests, and a battle for independence begins to erupt on each of the sisters’ doorsteps.

Author J. C. Graham has created both a political work and a family drama which asks important questions about the state of the world today, and the conflicts springing up everywhere within families of opposing views. The characters are well drawn but not too emotional, allowing readers to engage with the issues that each sister deals with from a slightly more objective viewpoint. I found Anna’s story one of the most interesting in regard to the land conflict, and it’s clear to see that Graham has researched the intricacies of these disputes very well, and given voice to them through convincing characters on both sides of each argument. The dialogue is also balanced and relatable, without too much jargon. Overall, I would recommend The Senator’s Daughters to all adult readers seeking to learn more about the current political situation in an entertaining way.
