Sugar Sand Land by Patricia Leavy is a love story for the ages. Emerson Blue is one of the most famous social media influencers in the world. She appeared to come from nowhere and announced her arrival with the question: “Who is Emerson Blue?” Her post went viral. She is beautiful, rich, talented, and extremely private about her past. Renn Walker was one of the greatest country music stars of his time. He fell from grace with the public after being caught up in a “#MeToo” scandal that rocked the entertainment world. In virtual hiding for several years, his agent and friend convince him to come out for dinner. When he and Emerson meet, there is an instant attraction, and despite them being opposites in many ways, the connection is undeniable. Renn isn’t even on social media these days, and Emrson lives there. Opposites do attract, but can they really form a life together, and can Renn break through Emerson’s shell and learn about her past?
Sugar Sand Land has every element I look for in a modern love story: conflict, instant attraction, an element of mystery, and two very unlikely candidates for romance sparking an electric connection. Patricia Leavy has created two romantic leads who couldn’t be more different from each other, and yet she manages to weave a romance that is both believable and, some would say, inevitable. I particularly enjoyed the clash between the culture of being famous for musical talent, as Renn clearly was, and being famous just for being famous; Emerson Blue, the Kardashians, and many more. What spiced this story up and lifted it above the others in this genre was the mystery surrounding exactly who Emerson truly is and her backstory. This gave the narrative a depth beyond that of just a romance. I appreciated the lovemaking scenes that were written beautifully and erotically. By setting the characters within the canvas of the glitterati and the rich and famous, the novel successfully questioned the effect of social media on our everyday lives and the blurring of the line between what is private and what the public has a right to access regarding celebrities. It is so easy in this world of AI and social media to create false narratives and convince your audience of a fantasy life that doesn’t actually exist. It begs the question: what is real and what is illusory? This is first and foremost a beautiful love story, though, and it is one I thoroughly enjoyed. I highly recommend this book.
