In The Serpent Stirs by Ankusha Sutey, Indira is a young, cosmopolitan designer from Mumbai who wins an expenses-paid holiday to the eastern coastal state of Odisha, which has a rich historical and architectural heritage. The days pass in a whirl of sightseeing, temple visits, and shopping, overseen by a wise and wisecracking guide. But something is happening behind the scenes, and someone is watching. Soon a terrifying and mysterious pattern emerges: a child disappears, the earth cracks, and no one knows how to prevent the next incident. Indira is thrown together with three strangers: Anantaa the ethnographer, Aditya the police officer, and Bhairav the scientist who believes in ancient mysteries and legends. Together they must stop the disasters before the pattern is complete.

The Serpent Stirs is a mythological thriller, an archeological mystery, and an enthralling story of four young people discovering ancient and forgotten mysteries of the Nagas and the Makara. Ankusha Sutey is a gifted writer who expertly weaves the plot with lyrical descriptions that do full justice to the spectacular setting. Readers will enjoy her observations on the differences between the two oceans bordering the Indian coastlines, the not-quite-hidden stories that peek through the tourist haze, and the magnificent natural world inland, whether or not this is a familiar setting to them. This is a gripping tale, and the first in a series on The Twelve of Konark. Each volume can be read as a stand-alone. I will be eagerly awaiting more from this talented writer. Highly recommended.
