The Shadow Enforcer is the first entry in The Shadow Enforcer Series by N.M. Thorn and a great story for fans of urban fantasy. Damian Blake is a haunted man and he believes that moving to Phoenix will give him a little respite from the demons of his past. He couldn't be more wrong because the seemingly peaceful town has its own terrifying secrets and it is not long before he begins to understand that even the lives of those he has learned to care about are in danger in this world of lies, intrigue, and mystery. When he finds out what he is up against, it is time for him to face it head-on or see the entire town swept away by an evil tide. But how much fight can he muster to combat the monsters and vampires?
This is an enthralling urban fantasy crafted in excellent prose with a protagonist that readers will adore. The prologue evokes a gory incident that dates back to 996 A.D. and describes an onslaught of violence. This immediately introduces the themes of violence and the struggle against evil. But most importantly, it sows the seeds of the suspense that permeates the writing as the reader keeps on looking for links to the mentioned incident. I loved the way the mystery is developed about Damian, an enigmatic character with deep layers that unfold as the story moves forward. He is a supernatural character, gifted with magic and incredible strength, but he is also a tormented soul. The Shadow Enforcer is a well-written urban fantasy, featuring beautiful prose and terrific and cinematic descriptions; the action is nonstop and the skillful handling of character elevates the story to superior standards.
