The Shadow War is a work of fiction in the urban fantasy and dystopian subgenres and was penned by Steven Cortinas. Part of the Legacy Series, it is presented in audiobook format with narration by Isheba Renee. Suitable for the general reading audience, this action-packed tale set in 1969 takes readers into a world where a group of genetically enhanced teenagers is released into a world in turmoil, ravaged by conflict and prejudice. Our protagonist Erin Escalante is a jaded young woman determined to shake up the system and use her powers for justice, rather than the wicked ends of those who created the gifts within her.
Steven Cortinas presents a superb tale with action on every page, sharp dialogue, and thrilling plotlines that will certainly keep readers on the edge of their seats throughout the entire story. The sci-fi and fantasy elements of the tale are woven seamlessly into the period so that they feel oddly relevant to the historical events taking place, and the overall concept of the tale holds true to its internal logic for a satisfying, poignant read.
In terms of audiobook presentation, the work is clear, crisp, and to a high professional standard, with great use of additional sounds where appropriate, but this never detracts from Isheba Renee’s superb narration. Renee has a keen sense of character, humor, wit, and pace that helps the story become an even more of an animated and action-packed tale, masterfully delivered. I highly recommend The Shadow War to audiobook fans everywhere seeking an engaging, high-octane dystopian read.
