A passenger on the Victoriana, a luxury ocean liner travelling between England and America in the late 1920s, is missing. In The Silent Film Star Murders by Melodie Campbell, the main characters, Lady Lucy Revelstoke and her maid and companion, Elfreda, start asking questions about this missing woman. The woman is the sister of stage and screen star Renata Harwood, another passenger in first class. Lucy and Elfreda become involved in the search for Renata’s sister by venturing into the second-class section of the ship. Eventually, they stumble upon two murder scenes. As amateur detectives, they seek out suspects and clues in both first and second class, creating chaos wherever they go. They engage the ship’s purser and another first-class passenger to help them solve the mystery of the missing person and possible connections to the two murders.

Melodie Campbell’s plot is fast-paced. It involves several suspects trapped in one place, reminiscent of an Agatha Christie whodunit. Lady Revelstoke, as the amateur detective, is aided by her companion, Elfreda, the likeable sidekick. Together, they are delightful and charming, with an upstairs-downstairs vibe. They interact with charm and humor, finding themselves in situations that challenge their expertise. From the first paragraph to the final chapter, Campbell captures the glamour of the late 1920s. She has a knack for illuminating the splendor of the ocean liner and enjoys name-dropping 1920s fashion icons when describing both women’s and men’s styles and dress. The Silent Film Star Murders would make a truly enjoyable movie.
