Claire is a soccer player. Her team has their last game of the season today. Claire is both excited and nervous about the game. She has not scored a goal all season and is feeling a little bit saddened by that fact. She really wants to contribute to being a team player by scoring a goal in this last game! Her brother, Jake, and their friends who play other sports are willing to cheer her on during her last game. Will their cheering and her determination be enough to score a goal? Come find out!
The Small Sports Go For The Goal written by Matthew Damman and illustrated by Patty Eisenbraun is a delightful children's book filled with many beautiful illustrations and a story which introduces young readers to the importance of being a 'good sport.' All too often, children who play sports get caught up in the hoop-la of winning and scoring and forget the other aspect of playing a game, such as having fun, being a team player and a 'good sport.' The game is not all about scoring the final goal or point.
Author Matthew Damman has created a wonderful story depicting that exact point. His main character, Claire, is highly relatable to young readers and sport players as most think the way she does in the story. Like in the story, children sometimes need to experience a loss to realize they actually did well in other areas of what they were playing or doing, and therefore still won in a way. The book is fun and very easily comprehended. A charming book for children and adults alike to enjoy.
