Have you ever been told you can’t love something or someone because you don’t truly understand what love is? That’s the hurdle that Shawn, the main character in the unique romance The Sound of Violet, is facing. He’s a young computer programmer with autism who lives with his grandmother in New York City. Dating is challenging for him, as he struggles to read people's emotions and facial cues, but he’s determined to find someone special. While navigating those obstacles, Shawn meets Violet at a work party. She’s mysterious and has personal secrets that force both of them to question what they believe about affection, trust, and courage as they learn to see each other more clearly. This story shows their shared search to discover what love truly is. The question is, will either of them actually figure it out?
The novel explores feelings of loneliness, the search for hope and faith, and the truth that everyone longs to be seen and to belong. Allen Wolf weaves together humor, heart, and an authentic portrayal of autism. Ever since I was in my early 20s, I’ve had an interest in autism spectrum disorder. After reading The Sound of Violet by Allen Wolf, I can honestly say it helped me better understand people on the spectrum, and the educator in me really appreciates that. Shawn is a very authentic character. He has traits that many individuals with that condition have, and I also think the story offers hope that they, too, can long for tenderness, even if the path isn’t simple. Violet, who isn’t autistic, also feels uncertain about what being close to someone really looks like. Once you start reading this book, you won’t want to put it down, and I wholeheartedly recommend it.
