At only ten years of age, Princess Adele of Iden loses the father she loves in The Spirit: Awakening by K.M. Riley. Her uncle, Lord Myson, lovingly takes the king’s place, but something drives Adele to search for more. Far off in the woods, Adele comes across a dwarf, Degura, with his guardian, Kisma, the blue bunny. It seems Degura has also been searching for the next recipient of The Spirit and realizes that Adele is that person. Bestowed with magical powers and her own guardian, Harper the dog, wolf, and any other shape he chooses to take, Adele travels the kingdom, trying to help people wherever she can.

On the occasion of Adele’s 18th birthday, a new suitor comes to the castle to try to win her hand. Locien, though, is the king of a neighboring country with which there has been no contact for over 50 years after many wars. Similar to the other suitors, Locien is not really interested in Adele for herself or her land, but in the powers he suspects she holds. Now, as ruler of Iden, Adele must discover all she can about her powers and seek out the Trinity – additional strength protected by three special entities - because she will need to be able to defeat the magic Locien has been perfecting for many years. When it comes to the fight for not only Iden but for her own life, will Adele be up to the challenge and how much can her guardians help her?

K.M. Riley’s vivid imagination and unsurpassed storytelling have created a fantastic new fantasy world full of all the characters, creatures and enchantment you could expect. The Spirit: Awakening catches you up in Adele’s life and, as you follow her adventures, you feel her love for her land and its people. Adele is not a perfect person – she has questions and vulnerabilities just like anyone – but her heart is pure and that aids her in her efforts to save Iden. The dialogue is brisk, the action is exciting and the emotions are deep, but there is also enough humor to offset the bad times. Unique characters and exciting action make this a great tale, along with the very real emotions presented by all the characters. Well written and powerful, with a strong and believable female main character, Spirit is a must-read for all fans of the genre.

The Spirit: Awakening by K.M Riley is a young adult fantasy about the Princess Adele. She inherits the Kingdom of Iden on her eighteenth birthday. However, she soon discovers that she's the heir to more than just a crown when she receives a power that is so mysterious it is coveted by an evil spirit. She runs from this evil, journeying to learn more about her secret abilities so she can use her power to defeat the enemy on her doorstep. Adele will fight for her kingdom, but without the full strength of her power she doesn't know if she can win. This is a classic tale of redemption and the struggle of good versus evil told in a fantastical realm of interesting characters, action, adventure, and great story telling.

Characterization is a real strength in this story. Readers will love Princess Adele because she is so real and amazing. Readers will love her independence, strength, and tenacity. Llaine is another appealing character. His troubled past is not enough to stop readers from loving him. Other enjoyable characters include some of the secondary characters; Harper the Ogre and Degura the dwarf. Readers will appreciate the fantastical elements of this story, especially having ogre and dwarf characters which just accentuates the believability of this genre. Readers will fall in love with these characters as they journey through this beautiful world and try to overcome evil by doing good. And readers will appreciate that.
