The Spot on the Wall by Rob Santana is a paranormal thriller about lust and greed, and the manipulative power of vanity. Ronald’s first mistake was deciding to buy his fiancée, Laura, a decrepit old house across from the cemetery. What’s more, there’s an eerie wailing coming from the place, which does nothing to negate Ronald’s feeling of foreboding. However, when the owner refuses to sell the house to Ronald, his desperation reaches overwhelming heights; at this point, nothing matters more than Laura’s approval. However, when Laura delivers a blow that leaves him reeling, he faces a tough decision. Meanwhile, Laura feels that her scheming has paid off rather handsomely. Or perhaps she’s overestimated the power she holds over Ronald.

Rob Santana delivers a dark and creepy tale of complex characters who have no problem scheming and plotting to get their way. I enjoyed The Spot on the Wall’s sinister tone; it complemented the plot well. The characters of Laura and Ronald are weak and incredibly selfish in their ways, but the lesson is clear: one can never expect to build success upon greed and lust. One can argue that Ronald’s heart was in the right place, but his naiveté and lack of self-control were pitiful and quite sad. However, I felt no sympathy for him as he allowed a silly infatuation to cloud his judgment. I enjoyed The Spot on the Wall as it was quite entertaining, although at one point there was an air of predictability.
