The Standing Sea by Tsung-Long Wu is a brilliant psychological, apocalyptic sci-fi thriller. We are transported to Keck Observatory on the summit of Mauna Kea. Dr Cole Harlan, an astronomer, detects a scientifically impossible, powerful gravitational source near the Moon. This is nothing less than a black hole. This phenomenon is the culmination of Cole’s two decades of observations and publications that no one took seriously until now. But now the elongated Moon signifies the impending end of the world, and Cole has to report to the U.S. President that the world has only 72 hours left. Advising the President – and everyone – to join their nearest and dearest, Cole does the same. But can the world be saved? And will Cole and his family survive the apocalypse?
The Standing Sea is the second novel by Tsung-Long Wu I have read, and it held me in awe from the first sentence to the last. I appreciated how the atmospheric, deadly doom contrasted with the love and kindness overriding the apocalyptic panic. The powerful symbolism and entrenched meaning of the wedding ring, the photo on the mantelpiece, the muddy boots, and the beef-and-mustard sandwiches moved me. The microcosm of Cole’s family in the three final days of the world kept me turning the pages. I loved the touching warmth of the parent-child relationships and the contrast between the child and adult perception of nature’s cataclysm. But what made the most lasting impression on me was the revelations by Cole’s father. This immersive work is bound to impress apocalyptic sci-fi fans.
