Why is brushing your teeth at night necessary? In The Sugar Bug Rush, Lindsay Woollard explains this concept in a fun and imaginative way, blending storytelling with a gentle lesson in dental hygiene. This picture book opens at bedtime as Buddy wonders why brushing at night matters. His mom then shares a childhood story about mischievous sugar bugs who made her a tempting offer, but only if she didn’t brush her teeth. What starts as a sugary dream quickly becomes a nightmare as they dig for “gold” in her sore tooth. Through creative illustrations and playful rhymes, children are introduced to what happens if they ever decide to skip the healthy habit of brushing their teeth. The book concludes with a helpful “Sugar Bug Brush” guide for young readers to take charge of keeping their mouths clean and healthy.

I appreciated Lindsay Woollard’s lively and rhythmic writing, which was both engaging and easy for young children to follow. As an educator, I especially liked how The Sugar Bug Rush combines humor with a memorable message, making it ideal for read-alouds in classrooms, in small groups, or during bedtime at home. It keeps young listeners engaged, and the whimsical characters, such as Sweetie and Treaty, bring the concept of brushing teeth to life, making this story easy to understand. The rhyme scheme flows smoothly, helping to reinforce key vocabulary, and the colorful illustrations support comprehension and engagement. This book sparks meaningful conversations about self-care and healthy habits, and I can envision it fitting perfectly into health or hygiene units for preschool through early elementary students. Educational and entertaining, it’s a winning combination for both teachers and parents.
