The Temptation of Dragons: Penny White - Volume 1 by Chrys Cymri is a unique take on a fantasy. Penny White is a priest who, driving home, discovers an injured dragon in the road, begging her to deliver his last rites. Despite being confused at the appearance of a magical creature, she fulfills his dying wish. Her handling of the situation leads Bishop Nigel to have her apply for Vicar General of Incursions, a position that involves tasks like handling the deceased dragon’s loved ones arguing over burial rites. She has to learn to balance her new job and life with Associate Morey (a gryphon) and her duties as a priest. When the dragon’s death becomes the center of a mystery, Penny has to work with the rules of this new world to find answers.
There are so many reasons to love The Temptation of Dragons: Penny White - Volume 1! It’s a nerd’s dream novel. I love every reference and joke, especially that Penny named the snail shark after Clyde the tortoise. This novel is perfect for any lover of Buffy, Elementary, Sherlock Holmes, Star Wars, and Doctor Who. Penny and the gryphon’s first meeting is one of my favorite scenes. He insists she can’t pronounce his Welsh name so she renames him with suggestions like Xander, but he prefers the classic villainous name, Moriarty (shortened to Morey). This is a novel that everyone should read. It has so many layers; religion, humor, friendship, family, marriage, and social norms. Everyone can find something to love. I haven’t been able to stop talking about it! It’s original, refreshing, and delightful!
