The Unbeautiful Butterfly is a children's picture book by Curtis Wright. It follows the journey of a little caterpillar into a butterfly. When a strong gust of wind blows a caterpillar egg from the leaf of a tree, it falls to the ground with a crack, and a little caterpillar springs out of it. The tiny caterpillar comes across a puddle and sees her reflection. She thinks that she is not beautiful. Soon, a butterfly passes by, and upon her advice, the little caterpillar eats a long vine, hoping to develop long wings herself. One by one, she listens to the advice of beautiful butterflies whom she admires, and along the way, helps out a few friendly strangers. After she grows into a butterfly, she discovers the true nature of beauty.
The Unbeautiful Butterfly is a moving SEL story for kids. This picture book offers a gentle lesson about discovering the beauty in our own selves. In some ways, it's a coming-of-age tale for young readers. Author Curtis Wright tells a beautiful story full of adventure and self-discovery. The little caterpillar depicted in the story represents all those young children who sometimes feel a little low on confidence or doubt themselves because of societal expectations. The young caterpillar's journey shows how friendship, empathy, and kindness are what make us beautiful in our own unique ways. I found the illustrations very colorful and vibrant, which perfectly complement the narrative themes. If you're a parent, you will love reading this book aloud to your children. Young readers are in for a treat!
