The Underground by Sara Francis, book three of the Terra Testimonies, concludes the years of war between the RRPR (Resist, Rescue, Protect, Retake) and OX, Order of Xenophon. Joshua Wolfrum, a.k.a. Wolf, is an undercover agent within the Order of Xenophon relaying information to RRPR strategist Shannon Hollinger and Seer Commander Yared Prinz. After years of stealth and secrecy, Wolf has finally gained the trust of his division officer – Titan PH. Being privy to more responsibilities and secrets within the Order, Joshua now has a wealth of knowledge to give Shannon and Yared. However, with living a double life comes a clash of loyalties as Joshua, a spy for the RRPR, vies with Wolf, a member of the Order of Xenophon, to whom they ultimately answer. Stakes are high as the chess game of war will come to an end.
Sara Francis’s The Underground is utterly compelling. I loved the delivery of the narrative through letters between Joshua, Shannon, and Yared. I loved the unique integration of Greek mythology as the basis for the Order of Xenophon’s members, divisions, and locales. I was completely captivated by Joshua’s/Wolf’s character; he is impeccably well-written and the struggles he endures as a spy is conveyed exceptionally well. I enjoyed the variety of mutants, bionic soldiers, super soldiers, and regular humans all participating in this world-changing war. Being the third book of the series, even as a newcomer, I could feel the weight and erosion the war has had on every character – even members from the Order of Xenophon. The Underground is a marvelous story that makes me want to read the entire series from the start even knowing how it will conclude.
