The Value in Our Lies by Colin Conway is a riveting tale that revolves around the Criminal Task Force of the Spokane Police Department and its senior detective, James Morgan. This street-smart cop is far from being a saint! Morgan makes unscrupulous decisions, but he knows how to get the job done. From engaging in a sexual rendezvous with an informant to paying off his informants with drugs, Morgan has done it all. He is not afraid to blur the lines between right and wrong. Now, rumor has it that a vicious gang has moved into the area, and Morgan has his way of dealing with "unwanted trash." Meanwhile, a new illicit narcotic is being sold on the streets, and Morgan thinks he knows who is responsible for its distribution. He does not care who he has to tussle with to bring the perps to justice—and he is not above clashing with high-ranking individuals in his department to get his way.
The Value in Our Lies is an unforgettable story centered around a flawed but fascinating cast of characters. From page one, readers will become entrenched in a quagmire of criminal intrigue, police drama, and a morally ambiguous main character. Through Morgan's escapades, Colin Conway does an excellent job of reminding readers that no one, regardless of position or influence, is faultless. Every action the characters engage in has repercussions attached to it, no matter how hard they may try to escape the backlash. I love the characterization of each unique persona. The criminals, informants, and law enforcement officials add an in-depth layer of realism to the story. Morgan's character, especially, stands out above the rest. He isn't your average police detective, but his clever and resourceful bravado wins my respect. He will definitely grow on you, too! If you are a fan of the Amos Walker series or enjoy reading morally grey detective stories, this novel is right up your alley.
