The monstrous Emperor Naradawk is about to break free from his otherworldly prison. The archmage Abernathy casts a spell designed to select several people who will be instrumental in dealing with the threat. Yet the chosen individuals confuse him – a thieving priest, an overconfident wizard’s apprentice, a priestess who’s forbidden from daylight, an elderly farm woman, a terrified baker’s son, a hard-bitten mercenary, a young naive nobleman and a painfully shy craftsman. Why them specifically? The archmage has no idea, but they’ll have to do.
The Ventifact Colossus (The Heroes of Spira, Book One) by Dorian Hart is a tale about a group of unconventional but memorable individuals who are unwillingly given the task of saving the world. I always appreciate humor in a story, and Hart implemented this aspect very well in the story. The narrative is flawless, appropriately paced, and not confusingly profound, compared to some fantasy fiction. The story is told from each member’s third person POV so readers can get to know the Horn’s Company – Dranko, Aravia, Ernie, Mrs. Horn, Tor, Grey Wolf, Morningstar and Kibi – personally and see the world through their eyes. Usually I would have one or two favorite characters when it comes to a band of misfits such as these, but I don’t as I’m quite fond of all of them. The plot has some great twists and the epilogue will pique readers’ curiosity. On the whole, this is a great start for The Heroes of Spira and I look forward to Book Two.
