Author Frances Angelina opens her book, The Virtuepops: How to Value Virtue Amid COV19, Stress, and Suffering, with a very appealing message. It is a read-aloud book to kindly share, discuss, and learn from together. This educational book targets the importance of educating and entertaining children to practice virtuous living in fun creative ways. As the first book in a series, it introduces you to the Virtuepop characters, what virtue they represent, as well as the definition and characteristics of each virtue: Believing B represents faith; Sharing Stephen represents charity; Persevering Philip represents perseverance; Loving Lucy represents love. There are a host of other characters that run in the same vein. The book is divided into three sections where the first opens with VIP notes to parents, educators, and caregivers about virtues. The second section explains how to teach and practice the virtues with meetings, discussions, and fun virtue-filled activities. The third section pops alive with the Virtuepops Adventures in Virtueland fantasy story.
At first glance, the book may appear intimidating, and both parents and kids could feel that the book demands that readers absorb much information. Frances Angelina, however, stresses that to better understand means to read and reread until understanding is gained. The big question is, would young readers be enticed to reread the story? As I read the Virtuepops Adventures in Virtueland, it occurred to me that it has a sort of Care Bears feel to it. Moreover, Angelina ensures that kids are thoroughly engaged in the story by providing coloring activities as well. Give it a chance, and you might well find that The Virtuepops is an ideal reading activity. The stories are short and episodic, and they unfold with a simple charm that respects the sensitivities of young readers. With its lively characters and educational value, The Virtuepops is sure to delight its target audience.
