The Void Unit: Shadows on the Wall by Maxwell A. Paris opens with rookie cop Ethan Silversmith on lone patrol. Despite his rookie status, Ethan is relegated to patrol by himself. As the story unfolds, we learn why Ethan has been shunned by the rest of the police force and why he is on his own as he answers a distress call. During the call, Ethan is faced with paranormal entities that threaten to kill him. The last thing he remembers from the call is being carried out of the warehouse, bleeding from wounds sustained during his fight with the creatures. His parents and sister Catherine (Cat) receive word that Ethan has been killed in the line of duty. However, Cat refuses to believe that Ethan has died. Cat has amazing telepathic abilities and swears she would know if Ethan were dead. Cat begins the search for Ethan as he is drawn into the Void Unit.

Not usually a huge fan of paranormal literature, I found myself drawn into this story. The characters are very well done – the human characters are very real and down to earth while the other creatures also became very real to me. The story line of The Void Unit: Shadows on the Wall is complex, taking twists and turns that kept me turning the pages until the end of the book. Maxwell Paris has created a cast and a story that left me extremely frustrated as I came to the end of the book without finding out what happened to some of the main characters. I cannot wait for the next installment in this series!
