The Warlock by Michael J. Andrisano Sr. returns readers to the magical world of the O’Flynn family in the third installment of the Harold & Megan Adventures. After surviving mythic encounters in Ireland, the family comes home to New Jersey hoping for normalcy, but high school has other plans for Megan. As if the first day of school wasn't enough trouble on its own, she meets a classmate with a sinister lineage. Fergusson Vardlokkur is a descendant of dark warlocks and a vessel for ancient evil. As strange occurrences begin to unfold, Megan, her parents, and their fae allies are drawn into a new magical battle that threatens both the mortal world and the magical one. It’s a story full of folklore, danger, and heartwarming family bonds.
Author Michael J. Andrisano Sr. has a fantastic sense of mood and atmosphere, and he strikes the perfect balance between fantasy adventure and family love in the tones that the imagery creates. I enjoyed how the story doesn’t waste time but jumps right into mystery, and the stakes build quickly for a great payoff that younger readers will enjoy. Megan continues to be a relatable and strong protagonist, and the addition of Vardlokkur as a villain ups the creepy factor in all the right ways. I appreciated how grounded the magical elements were in Celtic and Scottish traditions, which added depth to the world. The O’Flynn family feels real and warm, even when battling otherworldly forces, and that emotional core makes the payoff when they succeed feel earned. Overall, The Warlock is a fun, fast-paced read that mixes magical menace with heartfelt storytelling, and I'd highly recommend it to young fantasy fans and families alike.
