The Wedding by Herb Hughes begins the night before Brett Hampton, an American journalist, and Anya Laska, a Polish woman, are to be wed. He has snuck into her room, and they blissfully chat. However, their happiness shatters when German bombs rain down on the Polish town where they live. Unfortunately, Anya’s father perishes in the Nazi-led assault. Scared and confused, the couple flees alongside Anya’s grieving mother. The attack thrusts them into the beginning of World War II. Once on the road, the group quickly discovers that survival depends on constant movement, quick decisions, and learning who can truly be trusted. While resting in an abandoned property, Brett and Anya are forced to separate by German soldiers. Will they ever reunite? Will they make it through the war?

I was first drawn to The Wedding by Herb Hughes by its cover, but the description solidified my choice. The novel takes place during one of my favorite times in history. It is both emotionally powerful and difficult to put down. The historical details, like the Sonderfahndungsbuch Polen, or special prosecution book, make the story even more realistic. The narrative balances the intense wartime scenes with the heartfelt moments. Brett and Anya’s relationship adds warmth even during the darkest scenes. The pacing is tense throughout, fitting the subject matter perfectly. I also appreciated learning about the Polish civilians' experiences because I have not read about this conflict from their perspective before. Readers who enjoy World War II fiction, historical novels, and survival stories will definitely want to pick this one up.
