Sofia Margaret is a charming little girl with a secret friend, Meeda. The two girls are like twins, only Meeda is opposite to Sofia Margaret. You see, Meeda lives in Sofia Margaret's mirror. The two girls love to do the same things. They love to play and explore and even bake chocolate chip cookies (not to mention eating them together). Woozler is a grumpy kid who lives under a tree in Sofia Margaret's backyard. Woozler rejected his parents at birth because he wanted to be adopted. He became disenchanted with the world and turned into a grump. Sofia Margaret and Meeda often stand around the tree listening to Woozler grumping away in his cave under the tree. Neither girl likes the idea of living under a tree. They want to reach out to Woozler and make him happy. They want to be his friends. One day Woozler grumbles about losing a treasure map. The girls decide to help by making some chocolate chip cookies for Woozler. They leave a plate of cookies beside the opening to his cave, along with a note that tells him that the cookies are better than any treasure. Woozler finds and enjoys the cookies. Even his grumbling seems to lessen as he munches on the goodies. He doesn't pop out of his cave to make friends with the girls, but they are hopeful that it will happen soon.
Rhonda L. Paglia has written another delightful book in the Meeda and Me series for young readers. Children enter this world without prejudice. They don't judge and label as the adult world does. This book is about acceptance and friendship, something about which we all need a gentle reminder from time to time. Well done.
