The Word of the Muse is a work in the space opera, fantasy, and coming-of-age subgenres and forms the third novel of The Coseema Saga series. It is intended for young adult reading audiences and is penned by Bridgette Dutta Portman. In this fascinating space fantasy with a unique focus on mental health issues, we find ourselves fresh from the events of The Silver Sail, with Olive finally finding time to breathe as Coseema is far from her planet. But Olive has other problems as the wicked Emperor Burnash begins a hunt to capture Olive and take her powers for himself.
Bridgette Dutta Portman brings to life a vivid world with superb atmospheric and cinematic scenes, portraying a gorgeous fantasy backdrop for the serious and in-depth coming-of-age drama to occur. I was most impressed by how the text foregrounds issues such as depression and self-worth, but never at the expense of the story, working hand in hand with the characters and plot to teach important lessons about mental health naturally and engagingly. I adored Olive as a leading character. I warmed to her immediately, helped by the close personal narrative and dialogue style, which characterized her realistically and let us into her emotional journey. Overall, The Word of the Muse is an impressive and accomplished read that any young adult fan will surely enjoy as it works on many levels of fantasy, adventure, and emotional drama.
