Many of us don't really want to go on epic adventures or dangerous quests or harbor ambitions of becoming a hero. Joey Acker's The Worst Adventure Book in the Whole Entire World follows the story of Nameless -- an unnamed protagonist who would rather sit by the fireplace in his cozy home than go on any epic adventure. On this particular day, however, someone throws a boot through the window of Nameless' home with a message inside, inviting him to rescue a princess for the story to end. Left with no choice, Nameless reluctantly sets off in search of the princess and encounters a crow who warns him about the dragon. With some unexpected yet welcome help from a cow, Nameless must now face the dragon and defeat it. Will he be successful?
A humorous take on adventure tales, The Worst Adventure Book in the Whole Entire World is actually very funny and an absolute blast to read. Author Joey Acker gently pokes fun at stories featuring typical hero's journeys where the hero saves the day by rescuing the princess. In this story, the princess is more likely to rescue herself. The book never takes itself too seriously, and it's all the more enjoyable for that. Acker's humor hit all the right notes for me, and the artwork perfectly complements his storytelling style. This is the type of book you want when you're looking for a leisurely read or a laugh or two. It definitely got a few chuckles out of me. Recommended to readers of all ages.
