Thecla: A Dark Romance by Z Exie is a compelling story that combines romance and sci-fi to create great entertainment for readers. In a tale set in the very distant future, readers are introduced to young Thecla, a brave girl who survives impossible odds in her childhood, on her own after losing her parents. Everything had come to a head when the geothermal springs and geysers erupted across the country. Thecla trained hard, and survived the harsh conditions of The Wastelands after the devastation. It has been seven years, and now she excels as a well-trained fighter and hunter, but her contact with the Carpathia will change everything as she learns to navigate a new culture in a pious community ruled by Bishop Kato. She is challenged in new and forceful ways. Follow her path as she seeks acceptance, love, and the one thing that would help her survive.
This is a powerful story with wonderfully crafted characters. It is interesting and entertaining to be thrust into Z Exie’s setting. The world has evolved and cataclysmic events have made life unbearable for many people. Those who survive do so under the strict governance of the Church that has replaced governments, providing food to those who can afford it. It is within this context that the dramatic story of romance takes root. The story has a very strong conflict and readers will enjoy following Thecla as she seeks her path through this new civilization, her streams of consciousness, and her struggle to understand the ways of her world. There are very compelling characters, and I loved Thecla and Amir. Thecla: A Dark Romance is riveting, absorbing, and delightful to read, the kind of book that transports the reader into dreamland and makes them walk with the memorable characters long after they are done reading.
