Thieves of Greatness by Emily C. Burger is a young adult fantasy that starts off in historical England. Elizabeth hates her father, King Henry VIII, for guillotining her mother and abandoning her amongst her maid and half siblings. She is bitter and frustrated with her life. She wishes greatness would find her, but she doesn't know how to go about reaching for something that so easily slips out of one's grasp. Until one day, a pirate ship flies through the air. Elizabeth is startled to discover that no one else can see this vessel, and she is drawn to its magic and intrigue. But she has no idea what dangers and injustices she is stepping into when she agrees to join this new incredible adventure. Her journey will take her from 1545 England to Thebes, Egypt 1332 BC, across the continent to South American 1351, China 1636, South Africa 1897, and Ohio 1940. Alongside other famous historical characters, Elizabeth must move past her comfort zone and face a cruel tyrant in order to secure her dreams before she loses them forever.
While technically a young adult fantasy, this story will appeal to fans of historical fiction. The settings and different time periods within this story are very nicely described and really transport the reader into each different location. With so many different times and eras within this story, it could be easy for the reader to become confused or overwhelmed, but the author did a nice job of keeping each section separate and uniquely written.
