Remember the little ditty caregivers loved to use while tickling a baby’s toes? This little Piggy went to market, all while drawing out the first word, “this”? In This Little Puggy by Hailee Oman, readers learn about a little puggy who went to the market! It’s an interesting way to introduce comparisons. Two pugs are compared through the “This little puggy” lines. One likes a bath, the other doesn’t. One puggy is clever, while the other one gets caught doing something mischievous. One snores profoundly, while the other one likes to burp. One likes to sneeze, while the other one slurps - and the list goes on. But despite their many differences, there is one thing they do have in common. At the very end, what do you think the two puggies do?
Hailee Oman’s picture book story This Little Puggy is a Black Pug Cover edition, what the author describes as “a hilarious twist on the nursery rhyme for the pugaholic pug mom, pug dad, pug family.” In other words, it’s a book for pugaholics! The rhyming rhetoric is very similar to the nursery rhyme, but with a whole lot more to make young readers chuckle. I love the way the author uses this rhyme to make a comparative study of two pugs. Although different in many ways, they are ultimately the same always lovable pugs. The ending is a clincher and will have young readers laughing and echoing those profound words of what the two puggies have in common. The illustrations are just as much fun as the story itself. Loved it!
