This Side of the Law by Tamar Anolic centers on Jamie, a spirited prosecutor in a NY Special Victims Unit. Her relentless fight for justice is deeply rooted in her persona, shaped by her history as a survivor of a sexual assault. She accepts a high-profile rape case that has connections with an influential Russian mobster. One thing leads to another, and Jamie forms a complicated relationship with Alexander, the mobster's teen grandson, who is the central witness in her case. In turn, Jamie's emotional and professional boundaries become skewed, plunging her into risky territory. Simultaneously, Rostislav Gutin, a driven attorney, is a formidable rival, hellbent on unmasking Jamie’s wrongdoings and sabotaging her entire career. Through it all, she is forced to confront her past and a brutal judicial system.
This Side of the Law is an absorbing, striking, and suspense-packed legal thriller. Tamar Anolic’s writing is characterized by an intimate and natural tone that lures readers into the protagonist's ambivalent thought processes with unshakeable candor. Jamie’s complicated journey is superbly explored through her resilience and character flaws. She definitely is an unforgettable lead, that's for sure! I love how secondary characters like Gutin and Alexander add different layers of fascination and tension to the plot. The story's momentum is consistent, merging strong emotional instances with legal drama that delves into the complicated convergences of personal ethics, trauma, and power dynamics. Anolic does a good job of exposing the grey areas of human behavior and legal conduct. The outcome is a gritty and riveting scrutiny of justice that is both candid and well-timed. I highly recommend it.
