Many adopted children dream of exotic beginnings, but for the main character of Torii (To Rule the Universe - Book 1) by Amanda Marie, this turns into an unbelievable reality. Until graduating from high school, Tara has led the life of a privileged teen with wealthy, doting parents, but this is about to change. A strange encounter with a talking dog pushes the boundaries of her life in an uncomfortable direction. Her friends notice the changes, but she is unable to explain them. Then a tragedy occurs and she meets a boy with whom she seems to share a connection. Soon she is flung into the intrigues of Torii, an alien world of shape shifters and desperate battles, and here she learns her true identity as well as her role in a secret destiny of which she had been unaware. Her survival depends on learning new combat skills, but figuring out who to trust can prove equally challenging.

Torii (To Rule the Universe - Book 1) by Amanda Marie has a likable heroine, plenty of fast paced, ass-kicking action and plot twists, with a love triangle added for good measure. If you don't mind mixing up elves, vampires, flying horses and a lively cast of magical characters - some with their own mysterious motives and agendas - with 21st century conveniences, you will probably enjoy the ride. Join Tara, or Mayuri, as she is known on her home world, as she pieces together the puzzle of her origins, while battling a deadly enemy.
