“The only two things John knew for certain were that he’d graduate next year in the spring of 1962, and that his senior year would be his best if all went according to plan.” Oklahoman John Ashmore also knew without reservation that owning the ’47 Chevypride that Clark Parker promised to sell him would only make his last year of school even more special. So, when Hank Martin offers John the required salary to make that purchase possible, John weighs his options and plunges into an adventure of a lifetime. All John needs to do is drive Hank’s new ’57 Allis Chalmers tractor from Hawkins, Tennessee back to Hank’s farm in Oklahoma. After careful consideration and visions of his Chevypride, John, aware that he needs to be back home before his unknowing parents return from a business trip, agrees. John’s journey introduces him to sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll, causing him to doubt the future he held dear.

God-fearing John Ashmore comes face-to-face with the realities of life outside his country home in Ryan Uytdewilligen’s Tractor. A reflection of such greats as Steinbeck and Kerouac, Tractor is an entertaining afternoon read that evokes memories of a simpler era of honest morals and the hopeful dreams of youth. With unexpected plot twists and realistic dialogue, Ryan Uytdewilligen’s tale of John Ashmore’s tractor ride will have the reader nodding in delight as well as broken-hearted for the rash decisions the author’s main character makes. A must-read for both young and old.
