I enjoyed everything about this novel that reads perfectly as a standalone narrative — the gorgeous writing, the multidimensional characters, and the stunningly accomplished setting.

The imaginative use of light sabers, psychic abilities, and the tech of elements like the Draco ship is really well done, and I even got the occasional steampunk “feel” out of it. The Draco reptilians are such an interesting species to me, and I was happy to get some historical context about them and their past interactions with the Lyrans, which introduced a broader cosmic conflict and added depth to the lore. Lehrer throws in some excellent curve balls, like revealing the location of a hidden planet, and a catalyzing moment for Manuske that metaphorically feeds into the titular theme. Overall, this is a deliciously written, fantastic addition to an already stellar series and I enjoyed every page of it.
