Set in the land of the Talaniuca people, Treasured Angel: A Queen's Legacy of Love, Destiny, and Enduring Spirit by Abraham Tom Saboleh follows Minna, an orphan from Salpu Towers, who survives a violent raid and is raised by a wise elder. Her journey takes her to the Fenqui-Tunu kingdom, where she is selected to marry into the royal family. The return of Barlas-Zane, a childhood friend, disrupts this arrangement, but Minna still accepts her role as queen. She leads through periods of conflict, cultural shifts, and threats of invasion. Rooted in tradition yet open to transformation, Minna wades through leadership, love, and responsibility. Her actions influence her people’s future as she strives to maintain unity and stability in a time of uncertainty, shaped by both ancestral guidance and the world at large.
Abraham Tom Saboleh’s Treasured Angel is a beautifully written story, and Minna is an exceptional protagonist, particularly as she faces the pull between her loyalty to Sibyllia and her love for Barlas-Zane. Saboleh’s detailed descriptions are near cinematic, and I love the inclusion of ceremonies like the Kelumbari dance and clan customs, which give texture to a world grounded in culture and tradition, and bring the settings to life in a tangible way. The standout to me is not immediately recognizable, but the acknowledgment of power, colonization, patriarchy, and leadership through both the characters themselves and divisions in society lean into a subtle, but very important, commentary on social and political dimensions. Saboleh’s writing is tight, and he does well in allowing readers to connect with the characters and the larger context of their world. Very highly recommended.
