Troop 458 tells the story of new girl Rhonda and her lifelong friendship with Grace, Cassie, and Peaches. The story starts with several of these friends coming together to seek justice for one of them who has been wronged. You know within the first few pages, before we learn much about any of the women, that theirs is a solid friendship built on love and respect, among other things. The friendship between these four women endured a lot, including the accidental death of a classmate, Brownies Troop 458, and more adult events such as marriage, divorce, and abuse. Judy Iverson paints a lovely and emotional portrait of a tight-knit group of women and the highs and lows that bond them together.
Much of Troop 458 is the general telling of the lives of Rhonda, Grace, Cassie and Peaches as they grow from young girls into young women. They fall in — and out — of love, get married, get divorced, and deal with death, and through it all they rely on each other. Where Judy Iverson really succeeds with this story is weaving such a dark storyline with Grace and Hunter into the rest of this otherwise coming of age tale. She has created a wonderful story that runs the gamut of emotions from childhood innocence, naiveté, vengeance, love, heartbreak, and of course, friendship. Iverson did a wonderful job with character development from the four main characters to the supporting characters like Rhonda’s brother Michael, Hunter, Shirley and the rest. Troop 458 is a roller coaster ride that requires a few tissues to mop up tears of laughter and heartache, but it is well worth the emotions.
