Truth by Helyn Dunn begins in 1101, when Ena DuBois returns to Brittany with her young son Aiden, whose lineage places him at the center of political power and religious scrutiny. When Aiden is proclaimed king, his unusual knowledge and abilities draw the attention of church officials determined to claim him for their own purposes. As the bishops press for baptism and obedience, Ena learns that her family history is bound to ancient paths, sealed portals, and prophecies that predate Christian rule. Protecting Aiden forces Ena into open conflict with the ecclesiastical authority. Separated from her son and accused of heresy, Ena must come to terms with the consequences of long-dormant powers, as Aiden’s fate becomes inseparable from the future of the realm and the hidden forces beneath it.
Truth by Helyn Dunn is the third book in the sweeping Evensong Enchantments series, a historical fantasy grounded in the texture of the 12th century. Dunn is just so good at world-building, which is amplified by period details like abbey life governed by bells and prayers, bishops moving through Chartres Cathedral’s crypt, and stone circles standing beside neglected stables. The magic elements decisively redirect the book, and I had a fist-pump moment when Ena performs the miraculous at DuBois Castle in a single, striking act. What I love most is the way Druid magic is presented. Dunn leans into it as ritual practice, harnessed to land, fire, chant, and memory, and in doing so, she gives it agency, inside the eyes of the reader, outside of Church control. Overall, this is a wonderful novel with a heartening but deeply satisfying end, in a perfect unification of history and the fantastic.
