Turn Around by Carole Wolfe follows Heather Ramsey, a high school vice principal who expects to be promoted to principal at Stadium High but is abruptly passed over for outsider Shannon Parker. Reassigned under Shannon’s rigid leadership, Heather’s workload increases without compensation while her husband Matthew’s dry-cleaning business loses contracts, and their daughter Justine changes majors. Financial strain forces Heather to consider a second job and accept covert aid from her friend Angela. Meanwhile, Heather’s former boyfriend, Coach Brian Glover, offers help but may be manipulating her to hide a blackmail scheme involving high school football. When Shannon launches an investigation, Heather agrees to help. As her house literally burns and her life fractures, Heather begins reevaluating her career.
Turn Around by Carole Wolfe is a really well-written story that pulls readers into the many unfolding events with ease. Heather is likeable and fallible, and it's so refreshing that she is leaning on women for support, but doing most of the standing herself, and that remains the same with or without a man. Wolfe's prose is clear and realistic, the dialogue feels natural, and the pacing moves forward at just the right speed. Wolfe’s careful attention to all the character interactions is a masterclass in womanhood and friendships, while the unfolding mystery and Heather's questionable choices keep it real. I love that Angela, Stacey, Rachel, and Christine arrive to help Heather in an emergency, offering her a home, supplies, and even arranging care for her chickens. Yes! There are chickens! Overall, this is a fantastically enjoyable story that keeps the pages turning comfortably. Very highly recommended.
