Andrew is very excited about Christmas. It’s tomorrow, you see, and he’s hoping for lots of great gifts, especially from Santa. While everyone else is asleep, Andrew sits by the fireplace, admiring the Christmas decorations and trying to read the family’s favorite classic, ’Twas the Night Before Christmas. He stumbles over some of the big words and finds it difficult to concentrate as he hopes Santa will come soon. And he does, with his eight healthy reindeer: Novo, Huma, Dancette, Prancette, Basal, Bolus, Lantus, and Lancet. And, it’s not just the reindeer who are healthy. Santa is, too. Actually, he’s quite thin. Probably all those healthy snacks set aside for his annual visit. Andrew’s family has left out a box of Wheaties for Santa, as well as some insulin shots for type 1 diabetes – just in case.
Mike Suarez’s Christmas-themed picture book story, ’Twas My Type of Christmas: A Type 1 Diabetes Christmas Story, is a very modern twist on the classic family favorite, ’Twas the Night Before Christmas. Told in the same lilting rhyme of the original, the author weaves a story of a little boy waiting up to see a very healthy Santa and his very healthy reindeer. In this era of health-conscious diets, the story sheds a different light on how to celebrate a happy (and healthy) Christmas. The illustrations and the rhyming verse carry this charming story along with great class. This is definitely a new addition to a child’s collection of Christmas classics. Very cleverly done.
