Twelve Spoons by Riley Boerger is the story of Ruth Bilbruck’s valiant struggle to get a diagnosis for her chronic illness and learn to cope with its impact on her life. Ruth’s life changed completely when she started experiencing stabbing pains in her legs. As the pain intensified over the next few months, Ruth was in and out of hospitals and doctor’s offices, enduring various tests and physical therapy. At only thirteen, Ruth had to grow up quickly when the diagnosis of a chronic illness shook her to the core. But Ruth was not willing to give up. She is a chronic pain/illness warrior and her touching story is a beacon of hope for anyone with a chronic illness who is determined to fight on.

Twelve Spoons’ primary character, Ruth, is based on Riley Boerger’s personal experiences with her chronic illness. A poignant part of the book explains how a chronic illness support group on Facebook shares people’s struggles and is an invaluable part of their community. We often think that if we experience or see someone suffering, we need to do something to help, but sometimes the best thing to do is just listen. Boerger reveals the community she shares and that's why I think this book is a great tool to learn about chronic pain and illness. If you are suffering from a chronic illness, this book might be able to help you in ways you have yet to discover. I commend Boerger for her excellent writing skills and for highlighting a topic close to her heart. At only 15 years old, I can’t wait to see what other wonderful books she will write.
